Opinion: 2020 – The year of… Intelligent Workspace
For Rui Lopes, Solutions Architect of Cilnet a Logicalis Company, the year 2020 will be an embryonic period for “smart” workplaces designed to put technology at the service of companies.
It is becoming a habit in the EUC (End User Computing) community to launch at the beginning of each year a bet on whether or not the year will definitely be the year of VDI [Virtual Desktop Infrastructure]. In the beginning of 2020, and similar to what has been happening for roughly a decade, the ritual has not differed: those who argue that 2020 will definitely be the year of VDI, are opposed to the defenders that its time has not yet come.
Weighing all arguments, we are more inclined to say that 2020 is, once again, not the year of VDI. Not because we do not believe in the growth of this strategy of transformation (the demand for this type of job will continue to evolve), but because the definition of VDI became reductive when we fit it with the needs and emerging approaches in defining the future of the job.
The strategy of transforming and virtualizing the workplace has numerous advantages, both for users and for organizations, especially in the chapter of IT management. From the users’ point of view, mobility and the guarantee of safe access to a workstation (or applications from anywhere or device) continue to be the main arguments in the acceptance of a virtual workstation.
On the other hand and from the IT management point of view, the ability to simplify the management and life cycle of the workplace, the speed and agility, with which tools are made available to users, and information security remain the main reasons to follow this strategy.
However, it is here that the definition of VDI starts to become reductive, and we have to admit that not all users within an organization will be successful cases for a transformation to VDI. It is a scenario we see quite frequently during the processo f the transformation projects we have been developing.
Indeed, there will always be specific cases where transformation is not viable (for a number of reasons: technical, political, practical,…) or where the more rational approach will be to provide the necessary applications for each user to be able to develop their work, instead of providing a complete environment. These applications can be native Windows, legacy Windows, web-based, portable, native mobile, etc.
Ideally, the use of each application should be adjusted according to the user’s context (location, device, access conditions), guaranteeing to IT that there is, at the very least, visibility over the resources and information consumed. It should be possible to simplify and automate routine flows and processes, so that users can focus their attention on activities of greater value to their organizations. The satisfaction of each employee would therefore translate into a greater gain to the organization.
